Major Depressive Disorder
A mood disorder characterized by depressed mood or anhedonia lasting at least 2 weeks, plus at least 4 additional symptoms including weight changes, sleep disturbance, fatigue, guilt, concentration problems, or suicidal ideation.

Depressed Mood
A key symptom of major depressive disorder identified by subjective report of sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness, or observable tearfulness. In children and adolescents, it may manifest as irritable mood instead.

Anhedonia
Markedly diminished interest or pleasure in all or almost all activities, occurring most of the day. This is one of the two core criteria required for diagnosing major depressive disorder.

Persistent Depressive Disorder
A mood disorder occurring when major depressive disorder symptoms persist without remission for over 2 years, with no history of manic or hypomanic episodes.

A period of abnormally elevated, expansive, or irritable mood lasting at least 1 week, accompanied by increased goal-directed activity and at least 3 additional symptoms like grandiosity, decreased need for sleep, or racing thoughts.

Purposeless, non-goal-directed activity occurring during a manic episode, distinguished from goal-directed activity by its lack of organized purpose.

A mood disorder involving repeated hypomanic symptoms lasting at least 2 years, considered a less severe version of bipolar disorder lacking extreme mood changes, psychotic features, and marked functional impairment.

A less severe form of mania lasting several days, typically without the psychotic features, severe functional impairment, or hospitalization associated with full manic episodes.
