1
Pillars of Defense
Five core principles that define defensive excellence: confidence, attitude, probability, desire, and communication. These pillars guide how players should think and act when playing defense.
2
Confidence in Defense
Always believing you are the best defender on the field at any given moment. A timid defense is a losing defense; confidence affects whether you successfully take the ball away or get beaten.
3
Defensive Attitude
Mentally owning the offense and the ball as yours. Maintain hip-to-hip positioning, subtle stick contact, and controlled intensity to let the offense know they are not welcome, without drawing penalties.
4
Probability in Defense
Forcing the offense into low-percentage shooting scenarios by limiting shots from high-probability areas like the middle of the field and pushing them toward outside and low-angle shots.
5
Outside Shots
Shots taken from more than 17 yards out that have less than a 25% chance of scoring on an average goalie. Forcing these shots is a key defensive strategy.
6
Low-Angle Shots
Shots taken within 5 yards of the goal line and over 5 yards away from the pipe that have less than a 25% chance of scoring. Limiting these shots reduces scoring probability.
7
Caused Turnovers
Ground balls created when defense forces the offense into mistakes, resulting in the defensive team gaining possession. Each caused turnover means one fewer shot the offense can take.
8
Defensive Goal Expectation
If the team gives up fewer than 8 goals, they should expect to win. Between 8-10 goals is a competitive match. Over 10 goals requires the offense to carry the team.
9
Desire in Defense
The willingness to work hard and execute all the little things even if it is not cool or fun. Good defenders are never lazy and always hustle and communicate.
10
Communication in Defense
Talking loudly enough so all teammates can hear you, demonstrating commitment to unity. If you cannot be heard from the sidelines, you are not communicating effectively.
11
Defensive Speed and Takeaways
Key attributes for creating an effective defense, focusing on taking the ball away from opponents through stick checks and speed rather than relying on low defensive minutes.
12
Lacrosse IQ
The ability to understand positioning, angles, and game situations to make intelligent defensive plays. High lacrosse IQ enables defenders to be effective without excessive playing time.
13
Base Defense
The primary defensive system used, adjusted with specialist defenses and situational calls based on each player's individual strengths and weaknesses.
14
Situational Calls
Specialized defensive strategies deployed in specific game situations to minimize player weaknesses and optimize the team's defensive result.
15
Ground Ball Control
Getting clean ground balls without errors, essential for preventing second chances. This is a critical component of preventing defensive breakdowns.
16
Transition Push
Using caused turnovers and defensive stops to create offensive opportunities by quickly moving the ball to the proper personnel for scoring chances.
17
Hip-to-Hip Positioning
Staying directly next to your opponent on defense to maintain tight coverage and control when the ball is on the offense.
18
Stick Checks
Using your stick to dislodge the ball from an opponent's stick or to apply pressure. Effective stick checks require speed and proper technique.
19
Defense Sets the Tone
Defensive play determines how a game unfolds regardless of offensive performance. A strong defense dictates what the offense can accomplish, not vice versa.
20
Middle of Field Shots
Shots taken from the center of the field that have approximately a 7% chance of scoring if on-cage versus an average goalie, with 42% likelihood when accounting for accuracy.
21
Defensive Composure
Maintaining patience with newer varsity players while developing them and staying calm through game situations to avoid penalties and poor decisions.
22
Controlling Emotions on Defense
Not retaliating against opponent aggression or taunts. Stay focused and composed while letting opposing players know through your play that they are outmatched.
23
WPIAL Defensive Standard
The defensive standard of the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League. The goal is for this team's defense to be regarded as one of the best in the league.
